Hodak's Restaurant & Bar
About This Spot
Stepping into Hodak's Restaurant & Bar on Gravois Avenue is like slipping into a well-worn neighborhood gathering spot where comfort and familiarity unfold at their own easy pace. It’s the kind of place where the hum of conversation blends with the sizzle from the kitchen, and the clink of glasses punctuates moments shared between regulars and newcomers alike. There’s a warmth here that feels both genuine and rooted—an unspoken invitation to settle in, soak up the convivial atmosphere, and let the day slow down a bit.
The heart of Hodak’s experience revolves around its friendly, no-fuss approach to classic American fare, especially for those who know the simple pleasures of comfort food done right. Here, fried chicken isn’t just a dish; it’s a ritual. The golden-crisp crust gives way to tender, juicy meat, served alongside thoughtfully prepared sides that echo a home-cooked spirit. Whether you come for a casual lunch or an evening with friends, the menu offers familiar favorites that invite leisurely savoring rather than rushing through.
Beyond the food, Hodak’s carries the feeling of a local hub—staff who greet you with a knowing smile, a pace that respects your time yet encourages lingering, and a quietly enduring charm that feels like a little corner of St. Louis’ culinary heritage preserved. This is a place that holds space for everyday moments: a late lunch that stretches into conversation, a takeout order that comforts at home, or an unhurried dinner where neighbors feel like family.
Amid the bustle of the city, Hodak’s lives as a reminder that some of the best experiences come from food shared with good company in a welcoming spot where everyone feels seen. It’s a taste of tradition, a meeting place, and a slice of local life all wrapped into one.

Perfect experience. Greeted at the door by Richard where he discovered i was a world famous Fine Artist and we were treated like i was The KinG of STLmo. I even received a letter the next day in my mail asking how our Hodak's experience was. but are you Experienced?, well Jimi i am now...lol

We had a very late lunch today. My husband had the chicken dinner and I had the salmon. The chicken portion was so big that he took home two pieces and some fries. He really liked the chicken. The salmon was charbroiled with a bit of dill; it was quite delicious. The sides were mashed potatoes, canned corn, and slaw. The potatoes and corn were ok. The vinegar slaw was yummy. Since I eat gluten free, I was glad I had some options. Overall, we had a great experience. The waitress was friendly, and the atmosphere was laid back.

If you like FRIED American fare, this place is for you! Recommend the 1/2 Fried Chicken, substitute French Fries for Queso Mac’n’cheese and an order of Sticky Sauce for dipping! The coleslaw is vinegar based and uniquely good. Great value (affordable), very friendly staff that are stalwart figureheads that make the culture of this establishment what it is. Old school throwback neighborhood establishment vibes. As always, Tell’em OuttaTownTony sent you via Google Reviews!

Stopped in for the Wednesday lunch special. Had the Chicken fried chicken. The meal was fine as I expected but I was disappointed by the fact that my server simply dropped of my plate, refilled my drink once and then I never interacted with me during my entire time until she placed my check on my table. It would have been nice for her to stop by and actually asked if there had been anything else I might have liked or bothered to ask me how my meal actually was.

Look at the photo. If you are a fan of fried chicken stop by once. Then stop by again to explore the rest of the menu

Very good fried chicken. It may sound weird, but I liked their fried chicken livers more than the chicken. The breading on the chicken has no seasoning. Quality chicken, nice crunch, zero spice. Again, very good. I just like at least some seasoning. Service is outstanding. Place has tons of character as you would expect from an establishment that's been around since 1962. A must stop for anyone on a fried chicken journey.
